Tobacco Caye is about 10 miles East-south-east of Dangriga Town in Southern Belize. The island lies within the South Water Caye Marine Reserve, so it has some fishing restrictions since it is a part of Belize’s national system of protected waters. It is believed to have gotten its name because of the early cultivation of Tobacco in the area.
How big is Tobacco Caye?As one of the tiniest islands in Belize, Tobacco Caye is approximately only 200 feet wide and 400 feet long, providing an intimate but social atmosphere.
What activities can I do there?Despite its small size, Tobacco Caye provides its visitors with awesome natural attractions and activities. You can scuba dive, snorkel, explore nearby islands, hang out at local restaurants and bars or relax on the beach.
Is it a high-trafficked area?There are only about 20 permanent residents living on Tobacco Caye but it does play hosts to a number of tourists looking for that off-the-beaten-path beach experience. However, it is never overly crowded on any one given day. You’re guaranteed to enjoy your own part of the island during your stay. Are there restaurants on the island?
Yes, there are a couple local restaurants and bars on the island. Joe Jo’s has its own dining room for guests.
What’s the weather normally like?The temperature stays pretty warm year-round with mostly bright days filled with lots of sunshine and cool sea breezes.
Is it dangerous?No, Tobacco Caye is a very safe island.
How do I get there?There are 20-30 minute boat rides that leave Dangriga Town daily. There are also boat rides that leave Tobacco Caye daily every morning as well. As our guests, once we know your arrival time and mode of transport, we can arrange to pick you up either at the Bus Terminal or the Airstrip in Dangriga and transport you to Tobacco Caye.
Is the water good for swimming?The sea in Tobacco Caye is excellent for swimming, snorkeling and diving. It is warm and clear!
Will I have electricity and internet access on the island?Yes, Tobacco Caye does have electricity. Internet is available at the Tobacco Caye Marine Station at a rate of $15 BZD per hour if you use the Station computer or $10 BZD if you have your own device.
